How many times have you broken your heart over a piece of old jewelry that looks tarnished and ugly and you can no longer wear the piece? Tell you what, with simple things probably already lying in your house, you can clean the piece and make it shiny new again.
Here’s how you can renew your baubles:
*Before you proceed, note that chemicals or harsh abrasive cleaners are strictly not recommended for soft stones such as opals or pearls. Hand them over to a professional only.
- To clean your diamond jewelry, combine a cup of warm water with ¼ cup of ammonia and soak it in the solution for 15-20 minutes. Next, use a soft bristled brush to scrub away the grime covering all the little crevices. Shine restored!
- To clean your gold or gemstone jewelry, drop it into a mason jar filled with white vinegar. Let it sit for 15 minutes stirring occasionally. Scrub with a soft bristled toothbrush and Voila!
- To clean your metallic jewellery use antacid! Yes, you read that right. The fizz that works to soothe your tummy works on your jewelry too. Dissolve 2-3 antacid tablets in a glass of warm water and soak your baubles in it. Let it sit for 3 minutes, after which thoroughly rinse your jewelry. Genius it is.
- To clean your silver jewelry, line a tray with crumpled aluminium foil and gently place your jewellery on the foil. Sprinkle a tbsp. of baking soda over the jewelry followed by boiling hot water. Flip the jewelry to make sure all sides of it come in contact with the foil. Now watch as all the tarnish magically transfers from the jewelry to the foil. Your silver will shine like you just bought it from the store.
There you go! No more shedding tears over old, tarnished jewelry.
