“Snakes in the Garden” is the second episode of Reign. To refresh your memory on what happened at the castle last week, click here. Be sure to tune into Reign every Thursday night at 9/8 central on the CW. If you haven’t already, check out my interview with the executive producer, Laurie McCarthy. Here’s the latest gossip at the castle:
The English are Coming!
In the pilot, they are just a threat, but they manage to swarm their way into the castle in this episode. One devilish Englishman, Simon, either owns up to trying to kill Mary in the convent, or he acts like he did. He definitely reminds her that she is not safe anywhere, especially not in the French court.
Francis the Protector
Mary holds her own against Simon. She manages to appear strong, and even when that fails, Francis steps in. He shows how much he cares, which is a change from his behavior towards Mary during the pilot. Perhaps realizing that Mary is in danger changes his mind. Either way, there are some great moments between them in this episode. Did anyone else jump onto Team Francis after how he stands up for her and protects her during this episode?
Blood in the Woods
There is more of a glimpse as to what goes on in the Blood Woods. Bash is apparently quite familiar with the pagans and their various practices. He knows enough to slice his hand and say a prayer in order to protect himself and Francis from figures approaching them in the woods, assumedly pagans. There is a bit more to Bash than anyone, even Francis, realizes. How much do you think Bash knows about or is involved with what happens in the Blood Woods?
Francis stands up to his mother. He tells her if anything happens to Mary, he will know she is behind it, and she will lose him. She seems to take his threat to heart, but who knows, she may decide it is worth it if it means saving his life. Surely there are other ways to get rid of Mary that don’t involve threats to her well being.
Mary: “I had their word that we would be married. I’m not sure words mean anything here.”
Bash: “Dark and dangerous times, your grace, but your presence brings light.”
King Henry: “I’m intrigued by how much she matters to you.”
Francis: “Don’t give up. Don’t run. Stay.”
